6/30/2023 0 Comments Thrawn the last command![]() ![]() In this concluding story, there are no significant characters introduced. But standing in their way is the Mad Jedi clone, Joruus C'Boath. On the other side of the galaxy, Luke and Mara are on a deadly mission ready to take the war directly to the enemies source-the cloning facilities. Meanwhile, Leia is all alone in the heart of the enemies territory desperately trying to make a new ally that may change the tide of the war. ![]() ![]() If this is bad enough, there is the new revelation that Thrawn seems to have in his midst the abilities to clone soldiers-and he has not wasted time in using this technology! In a desperate attempt to strike back at Thrawn, Han and Lando-with the assistance of Talon Karrde-are in the midst of trying to make, and then hold together, a weakly formed alliance of smugglers. While the political maneuvers of Councilmen Borsk Fey'lya-from the previous volume-have sorted itself out, a security leak from within the Republic, called "Delta Force", seems to be supplying the Grand Admiral much needed intelligence. No longer a mystery, the New Republic is very aware of his presence and are in the middle of trying to figure out how to handle it. Picking up right where Dark Force Rising (Volume II) left off, this novel continues with the (very quickly) rising-to-power of Grand Admiral Thrawn. ![]() The Last Command concludes the masterful Thrawn trilogy just as it began-with fantastic storytelling! 6/30/2023 0 Comments A fist full of shells![]() ![]() The concentration of money in the hands of Atlantic elites in and outside these kingdoms brought about a revolutionary nineteenth century in Africa, parallel to the upheavals then taking place in Europe and America. Green shows how the slave trade led to economic disparities that caused African kingdoms to lose relative political and economic power. With A Fistful of Shells, Toby Green transforms our view of West and West-Central Africa by reconstructing the world of these kingdoms, which revolved around trade, diplomacy, complex religious beliefs, and the production of art. We have been living with the effects of this shift ever since. But, as the slave trade grew, African kingdoms began to lose prominence in the growing global economy. Until at least 1650, this was a trade of equals, using a variety of currencies-most importantly, cowrie shells imported from the Maldives and nzimbu shells imported from Brazil. Its gold had fueled the economies of Europe and the Islamic world for nearly a millennium, and the sophisticated kingdoms spanning its west coast had traded with Europeans since the fifteenth century. By the time the “Scramble for Africa” among European colonial powers began in the late nineteenth century, Africa had already been globally connected for centuries. ![]() 6/30/2023 0 Comments The lost spells review![]() ![]() The backlash from authors all over the world was immediate, without the words how would the next generation connect with nature? Macfarlane and Morris took it a step further. This book is a sequel to The Lost Words which was written after The Oxford Children’s dictionary removed around 50 words related to the natural world and added broadband and cut and paste. Also, The Lost Words, for which she won The Kate Greenaway medal in 2019. Jackie Morris has authored and illustrated numerous books among them, one of my favorites, The Barefoot Book of Classic Poems. Robert Macfarlane has written several books on nature and landscape which have garnered numerous awards including British Book awards 2017 children’s book of the year for The Lost Words and is a fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. ![]() Giving a voice to the inhabitants of our world who are easily forgotten. The author and artist of The Lost Spells present their book as a means for reconnection with the natural world. ![]() 6/30/2023 0 Comments Eiji yoshikawa's novel musashi![]() I find Yoshikawa's Kojiro is far more sympathetic than it appears on the surface (though nowhere near the same as Inoue's). I think they're incredibly similar in many ways while obviously being spiritually polar opposites. ![]() His interpretation of Kojiro and Musashi's dynamic has been compared to Satan and Jesus, which I still find. Obviously, the Musashi chapters are the most intriguing and offer the most insight into Yoshikawa's vision of this legendary figure. The first half of the book, I could put up with the side characters and their various stories and how they ultimately intertwined, but around the 10th Iori-gets-into-trouble-and-has-to-work-at-the-tea-house chapter, I gave up on reading those seriously. This is one aspect that I lean more towards Inoue in. ![]() Yoshikawa's world definitely involves more characters, or at least, focuses on them more than Inoue. Great ending, surprisingly amazingly paced towards the end of an otherwise frustratingly structured book. Finally finished this huge novel last night, after about two years of procrastination on my part. ![]() 6/30/2023 0 Comments Clown in a cornfield 3![]() ![]() “Nostalgia driven, elevated horrors that deliver on the promise of the genre – thrilling action, heart-stopping suspense and deeply satisfying endings – continue to dominate at the global box-office,” said Protagonist CEO Dave Bishop. “We love Eli Craig’s brand of scary fun and are thrilled to be working with him on this terrifying slasher adaptation that is both timely and timeless,” said Temple Hill producers in a joint statement.
